Ajax is where the westbound 401 stops being a highway and starts being a queue. The Salem Road interchange at the eastern edge of town is roughly where the morning backup takes hold, and from there through to Whites Road it is solid from about 6:45 to 9:30 on a weekday. Living in Ajax means you are already inside the problem rather than approaching it, which is good news and bad news: the distance to Pearson is only about 63 kilometres, but the first ten of them are the worst ten in the region. An 8am international departure from an Ajax address works on a door time around 4:35, which is earlier than the distance alone suggests. The town runs north from the lake on Harwood and Westney, with Pickering Village tucked in at the northwest corner keeping its own older character, the Bayly and Salem industrial strip along the highway, and the waterfront and Rotary Park at the bottom. Lakeridge Health's Ajax-Pickering hospital draws clinicians in from the airport at odd hours, and the business parks along Bayly generate the visitor traffic that has to be brought out from Terminal 1 and delivered somewhere that looks nothing like a downtown address. Ajax is also close enough to Brock Road that the 407 is a realistic option for a mid-morning departure, which it is not from the eastern end of the region.
